How to Start Getting Fit

April 19, 20254 min read

The beginning:

This is the start of your fitness journey and here are what I as a CPT (certified personal trainer) highly recommend doing before you head into the fitness game.

Please keep in mind these are professional opinions not requirements and if you are unsure if this is right for you please consult a doctor or other professional before attempting these.

5 reasons

With that said, here are 5 ways To start that fitness journey

1. The detox

So you want to get into fitness and the first thing you do is jump right into a program, hop on a diet plan and hire a personal trainer and now you've already spent so much money thinking this is gonna be the end of it. Well this is where most people tend to go wrong and end right back up with not knowing where to start.

What I refer to as the "detox phase" is simply slowing down and cutting out bad habits that got you to this unhealthy point in your life. I for one decided right off the bat to stop jumping in to desserts and eating everything in sight and took more control of my life. I did not jump into a plan or hire anyone I simply bought healthier food to eat daily, cleaner sources and turned my head when I had the chance to eat something that persuade me.

Instead of going right into commitments you Simply start slow by replacing old habits with new. For example, instead of sitting all day and eating healthy you can move around cooking healthier options while still enjoying time to yourself.

2. Surround yourself with success

I'm sure there are some people out there who come from nights of partying, days of unproductivity and just those slow 9-5 work weeks. Now if your looking for an easy fix of pushups every day and at home ab workouts to lose the belly and outwork your current lifestyle then unfortunately we have some work to do. If you are a social drinker or couch potato, maybe you have that one friend/family member who has to judge you on every little thing you do then you must give be rid of it and walk a different path. Tell your friends and family that your making healthy lifestyle changes and if they laugh, they laugh. If your friends are mad or upset you wont go out with them or you act a bit different then maybe they weren't good friends to begin with. If you surround yourself with people who support you and uplift you maybe even motivate you to reach your goals then your guarantee to achieve what's on your mind.

3. JUST DO IT !

Okay okay yes that may sound like Shia LaBeouf or a drill sergeant telling you to put aside your feelings and get on with it but I promise I as a coach do not like to teach like that. However, some people need that extra kick or pre planned workout to actually feel motivated and reach those goals. I personally will not tell my clients to drop their feelings and friends just to get a workout in or forget the injury and discomfort and just push through it. But sometimes people will turn away from my training style because I am not what they are looking for and they need that trainer, coach or company to make that workout for them and tell them what its suppose to look like and that just works for some people.

4. Set Goals

Yes obviously you want to have something to work for but if you think a new gym goer could see results after a week then boy would gyms be filled to the brig. Set small goals you can achieve within the first week or first month like lose a few pounds or get familiar with equipment.

Those are some good ones to have instead of getting demotivated because you don't look like a body builder after a month or your stomach is still big after a week of ab workouts.

5. Do what you can

Sure its nice to learn how to bench press or to do a squat but if your feeling ambitious and want to copy a workout you saw online or someone else preform, than just make sure you have the correct safety precautions taken.

Its also good to keep in mind that not everyone is able as the next person. Some people are bigger, taller, shorter and even thinner. But that doesn't mean everyone has the mobility either. Do what you know you can do and stick with it before someone gets hurt. That way you still have a reason to come back and stay consistent and don't get set back due to a an embarrassing injury.

Hope you enjoyed some of tips but again keep in mind if any of these are not working then seek extra guidance and always remember to stay safe and train on.
